Statement Analysis: Detecting Deception in Written Statements

“I can honestly say the training was over the top. All I've been hearing is that was the best training any of my people have gone to.”

William Quigley

Deputy Chief of Police

Weare, NH Police Dept.

“It’s about damn time someone taught a class that cops need. Thank you John.”

Chief James McTague

Temple-Greenville NH Police Department

“Thanks, John.  I took your basic course at the Vermont Police Academy a few years ago, and it has been one of the most useful trainings I've been to (and I've attended a lot over the years). “

Shelburne, Vermont Police Officer

“Great analysis advice, will use most components in my line of work.  Highly recommend this course. Course met all objectives.” Vermont Investigator.

“It was very informative, and I’m looking forward to using it.  Yes, I would recommend it to investigators....as a police officer I didn’t realize how many other occupations require skilled investigators.” Vt. Police Officer

“The instructor was prepared, informative, knowledgeable and a good presenter. “

Sergeant Caladonia County Sheriff Dept. –   John Healy did an excellent job and I would definitely want to attend an advanced class!  I would recommend this class to all law enforcement officers.

This class has been presented at:

The Vermont Criminal Justice Academy

NH Police Academy (Advanced SCAN)

Vermont Bureau of the ATF

Warner, NH Police Dept

Weare, NH Police Dept

Vermont Attorney General

Vermont Defender General

Bennington, Vermont Police Department

And many other venues

The SCAN (Scientific Content ANalysis) technique is used to analyze the language used in written statements for signs of deception, concealing information, veracity or editing, (places where the subject has omitted sensitive information).

COURSE OUTCOMES

At the conclusion of the presentation, students will:

1. Be introduced to the SCAN technique and its history.

2. Understand that most people do not lie; they just avoid the whole truth.

3. Understand that true stories come from memory, false from imagination and they are written very differently.

4. Understand the concept of an “open” or “pure version” statement.

5. Learn every person has his own “linguistic code”.

6. Understand by using linguistic methods to break and decipher the subject's linguistic code, we are able to obtain more information and to reach an accurate decision concerning the reliability of the information.

7. Recognize that with SCAN we discover the full story that the subject didn't want to expose openly in the content of the story.

8. Be introduced to the VIEW Questionnaire concept as a component of SCAN.

9. Understand that the VIEW questionnaire can be used with multiple suspects.

10. Learn the mechanics of the analysis process.

11. Be able to identify linguistic signals of deception, editing or sensitivity.

12. Have had the opportunity to read and analyze actual written statements.
